Toni-Ann and Gloira
The story of Lucy's goes back nearly 20 years now. The evolution of the business to today's status is one of family, food, hospitality, and stamina through change.
Originally called "Balzano's," our doors opened in September 1998 by Mr. B and his daughter, Lucy Hergan. It was Mr. B's homemade family recipes and superb hospitality (he personally served complimentary wine and cookies to every guest on Friday and Saturday nights) that made Balzano's into a very special kind of hotspot. For 14 years, 208 East Street was a very special place to a lot of very special people.
Recent years brought many challenges and changes to Balzano's and family. Mr. B lost a long battle with cancer in January of 2013, just 8 months after he and Lucy together adopted a new restaurant location with more seating and a full bar at 112 East Main Street. His passing and the resulting changes led the business to evolve yet again. In October of 2014, Lucy sold the new, larger "Balzano's" at 112 East Main Street, and reopened at the original location on the corner of East and Main as Lucy's Kitchen and Catering. Since then, the focus has primarily been on catering and serving our family and friends at Rolling Pines Golf and Banquet Facility, and all over Central PA.
In 2015, Lucy decided to move our business one more step toward catering, closing the doors at 208 East Street for the last time to table and order service on May 30th.
With Lucy’s family growing (she now has SIX grandchildren!) and her husband, Andy’s retirement after more than 35 years in education, the Hergans are ready to focus on family. Lucy’s father, the now famous Mr. B, made no secret about the value of family and as her three children have grown and are starting their own, Lucy and Andy have more of a desire to travel and spend time together. Lucy’s semi-retirement was made official on October 15, 2018.
Through the years, change has never been something that has affected our values. Craft Catering, LLC is the proud new owner of Lucy’s Kitchen and Catering. Craft is made up of Toni-Ann Yates and Gloria Bailey, who have both served over a decade with Balzano’s Italian Kitchen and Lucy’s Catering. Toni-Ann served as General Manager at both of the restaurant locations and as Catering and Events Coordinator since 2008. Gloria has been the Banquets Manager at Rolling Pines, pre-dating Lucy’s exclusive agreement with the venue and every year since. The team, including James Faust, Executive Chef, is made up of employees and friends who have been with us for years.
The future of Lucy’s is built on the memories of the man who brought us the recipes, the hospitality, and the care for serving others. Bringing family together at weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, any milestone, is what Lucy wants to cherish in his loving memory. Mr. B. will never be far from our hearts or our business. His photo will hang in Rolling Pines, to remind us to love what we do, letting our family serve yours.
We’re not far up the road, come on in, because when you’re here, you really are family!
